SNOEK
When the fishing season for snoek arrives around February, the local fishermen take to sea in their fishing boats providing us with a fresh supply of snoek right on our doorstep! For ages snoek has been part of everyday live on the South African West Coast, and the existance of many families in the fishing villages depends on the availability of this commodity.

CAPE HAKE
"Two species of Cape hake occur off South Africa: shallow-water Cape hake (Merluccius capensis) and deep-water Cape hake (M. paradoxus). In both species there is a tendency for the mean size to increase with increasing depth; thus older (larger) M. capensis co-occur with, and prey upon, younger (and smaller) M. paradoxus. The two species are morphologically similar and are marketed as a single commodity, therefore statistics derived from the commercial fishery (e.g. catch and effort) are not available for the two hake species separately . . . . . Hake are currently fished in the deep-sea hake trawl, inshore south coast trawl, longline and handline fisheries." - South African Journal of Science volume 105 no. 5 - 6 Pretoria May /June 2009

SQUID - CALAMARI

"Chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris reynaudii), belongs to the Loliginidae family . . . in Southern Africa they are distributed from the Eastern Cape into Namibian waters. There is a directed squid jigging fishery in South Africa. Jigging is a highly selective fishing method, which has little to no impact on the marine environment. This methods employs the use of hand line and a jig (otherwise known as a dolly), the latter is a brightly coloured plastic lure with barbs protruding from the bottom."  - SASSI - The South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative
